Hotel LAN?
So tomorrow I'm leaving on a field trip to New York City with my school and we're allowed to bring whatever we want. So far it seems that about 5 rooms including my own have people bringing their XBoxes, and I wanted to know if it were possible to be able to hook all of the Xboxes up to each other without having to be in the same room at a hotel. Is it possible, and if it is, is it free?

Re: Hotel LAN?
First, the free part would depend on the hotel, does it have a LAN, do they charge, etc... not what you ask on a modding forum but the hotel website.
Second if the hotel has a Lan then yes you should be able to hook them all up with each other.
Third what would you be doing playing you stupid xbox while in NEW YORK CITY!!! Geez, you can play the games any time at home but you don't go to new york every day!, okay so that's just my two cents and i'm not insulting anyone, so plz don't take it the wrong way.

I'm assuming there's a curfew that people HAVE to be in their rooms by. That's when you whip out the Ecksbokssez and have a party that you wouldn't be able to have at home due to lack of TV's and a large enough network in one location.CalvaryCptMike wrote: Third what would you be doing playing you stupid xbox while in NEW YORK CITY!!! As for the topic at hand, it DOES depend on the hotel if the internet is free. Usually, if you have to plug in a cable to connect to the internet, it is not free, it is pay-per-hour. If it's wifi, then it usually depends, but it also might require an internet browser to log into the hotel's network via the "I accept these terms" button. Just check to see if there are any information pamphlets about the hotel services when you get there. You'll be looking for a "WE HAVE FREE WIFI!!!!" or "How to connect your laptop to the internet (if it doesn't say "Free" right at the top, it's probably not)" type brochure.

Re: Hotel LAN?
Wait, so if I want to use LAN for free, then the internet at the hotel has to be free too?

Well, why else would you ask if it was free? That's what we assumed you meant, connect all the Xboxes to the internet so you'll all be on the same network.

LAN. The topic title is LAN for a reason. The internet in the hotel I'm gonna be in costs 12.95, but I was wondering if anyone knew if it would normally cost to connect to the hotel's local network.Twilight_Warrior wrote:Well, why else would you ask if it was free? You will have to pay for both. They are both part of the hotel network

Re: Hotel LAN?
The hotels that I've visited don't seem to have local networks that you can access (as far as I know). You might want to try having each Xbox connect to a wireless router brought by someone and every one connecting to that. Of course anyone that doesn't have the built-in wireless (the newer ones do) will need to plugin to another router so they can connect...
Sorry, I can't think of simpler way.

Re: Hotel LAN?
Hotels don't have LANs in the traditional sense. It's all individual connections that point to one server. Sounds the same, but there's not a traditional router there to allow rooms to communicate to each other. I don't know why, but one reason that comes to mind is security. If you work for Microsoft and a Nintendo employee is staying next door you don't want to give them access to start trying to hack into your system.
Long story short if you want to get on Xbox Live and link up with other people in the hotel that works as you go out to the internet and back, but LAN is a total no-go.

Okay, cool. So do you know if Sim's idea to bring a router would work?

If you were to give me a nickname Alex would be better (just in case anyone ever wondered ).Fluffy_the_ic wrote:Okay, cool. So do you know if Sim's idea to bring a router would work?

Yeah, but there are two caveats:Fluffy_the_ic wrote:Okay, cool. So do you know if Sim's idea to bring a router would work?
-A wireless router would require everyone to have the wireless Xbox 360 adapter (about 90 USD)
-A wired router would likely get you into trouble with the management, what with wires going out into the halls.

Re: Hotel LAN?
Okay, cool, because everyone happens to have wireless routers except two people, one has the new xbox and then we were gonna put the router in my room so we could attach our Xbox to the router directly anyway and lend the other person our adapter.Teancum wrote:Yeah, but there are two caveats:Fluffy_the_ic wrote:Okay, cool.
