Graphics Card Fan Does Not Work

Post by StarkillerMarek »

...And I can see my gaming melting along with the graphics card.

Like the topic says, the fan won't run. It stopped running a couple weeks ago. I hadn't notice anything really change until the monitor kept going black, and showing weird lines, in the middle of certain games. Well, after that, I opened my old computer up, and to my total suprise, the fan was completely covered in dust bunnies. Then one half of my brain said, "I wonder if all that dust is keeping it from running", then my other half said, "Duh". So I tried cleaning it out. Soon, no more dust bunnies could be found. I run the Computer, and I hear this vroom sound every couple of seconds. It wasn't running all the time, but I thought, oh well, maybe it'll stay cool enough. Sure enough, no problems with games ever showed up for a while. A while after, it stopped making the vrooming sound, and the monitor startred turning black with strange lines again. I've tried cleaning it out over and over, but it still doesn't run(the fan). I've searched the Internet but I seem to get mixed answers. Does anyone hear have any ideas?

Your fan seems to be dead, look up a replacement fan for your model

I tried opening the computer up today, and running it. Actually, it appears now to be running. And I can hear it too. However, if I try to run any 3D program or game, after a while everything will fuzz up in certain places.

Sounds like your GPU is overheating. Replace the fan on the card, and until then don't stress the card or you can cause permanent damage. The fan is probably working somewhat, but not as it should.

Try downloading and running this, and tell me what the temperature is.

Also, what kind of card is it?

Well, I would, but now, nothing shows up on the monitor at all. I think the video card is dead. It was an ATI 9700 All-in-wonder card, by the way. But I think I will need to replace it.

congrats on 666 posts! you are satan for a day.

re: your card if its the default card for 9700 ati is only 128mb, that should be in the garbage years ago. You can get a 512mb or 1gig for under 60$. If you decide you just want to get a replacement here is your exact card on ebay for 25$ there are others similar for less money. wish i knew i have 2 - 256mb via cards, pcie and agp just laying around collecting dust. happy catching up to the rest of the gaming world)

Thanks you so much. My computer is from 2001. So far, we have upgraded the CD rom drives to DVD drives, replaced the original 32 mb drive, replaced the motherboard, bought an external hard drive. How's that for an overhaul? Anyway, thank you again, I will look at it.

However, I am pretty sure it needs to be AGP, and it looks like the one in the picture is PCI.
