In all reality, what kind of platoon lets their soldiers run up, stick a detpack under a droids foot, and blow themselves up, then respawn and do it again...

The difference here being that the ability to fly from space to ground is an intended design decision whereas the ability to commit suicide with a detpack is the player's choice based on exploiting the game design.

Leave out space-to-ground ability? Solve that issue, no consequences. Leave out detpack explosion? Break game.

That's a nice strawman, though.

To reply to the conversation earlier in the thread about mod tools...
I just wanted to add that DICE has some job postings for tools engineers for their FrostEd tool suite.
To speculate, perhaps they're working on their too suite for a reason.
Also, question for the group. How do you think the battlefront modding community ranks as far as other modding communities out there? Would you say top 10? top 5?

Battlefront modding (even at its most active) has/had a really small community. As much as I like us, we're not close to top ten - we're too small and too unskilled. Our best work is only average compared to the kind of work done on other games.

Top 200 maybe. It's a franchise game that's eight years old and had its tools released to very little fanfare. The engine is pretty poor when it comes to standing the test of time, which is also why most moved on a long time ago.

One could dream that DICE would see the creative potential with a well crafted set of mod tools and release it. Alas though, I dont think they will be that generous. Though Battlefront 2 is a pretty old game, I think it's becuase of mods that it lasted longer.(I guess you can say that about any game with user generated content).

Most companies don't have a set of tools that are user friendly. They're usually in a total state of flux, constantly being updated, broken, fixed with some hack, and run again. To get any set of tools "Mod tools worthy" is a pain, and super expensive as now you have to get them to a point that they're stable and usable to folks outside the company with no experience. That coupled with things like costs for creating EULAs, support etc...

Sure would be nice though, I'll give you that. If anything I'd say you'll see the release of tools happen less and less as games get more complex.

LucasArts (or Disney, whatever) is still making money off of Battlefront even today. Whenever I go to Target, I see Battlefront in the BoPC pack thing on the shelves still. Also, I bought the PC version of Battlefront solely for the mod tools, 7 years after it came out, and I'm confident I can say that for many others. I'm also confident that Battlefront 3 will be just as popular, so surely DICE understands that if mod tools are released, even if they are costly and time consuming, it will increase the longevity of the game and therefore keeps the game on the shelves, which in turn keeps the revenue coming in. Of course, I don't know much about business so there is the possibility that the continued revenue, which grows smaller every year, would not be able to let the game make a profit from the mod tools.

Steam is probably a better example of LucasArts/Disney making money off of the franchise than your local Target... I don't know if the Best of PC collection is being manufactured any more. Target already paid LucasArts for those copies (well, it's a bit more complicated than that, but we'll stick with that for simplicity's sake), probably back in 2007 when it was made, and now Target is just trying to sell their stock. LA is finished with their part of the business at that point; Disney isn't going to see a cent of what you pay Target.

Getting off topic a bit, but what game would you say has the top modding community?

Well unsilled is too hard. I do some work in Cryengine too and i have to say its sooo much easier to do a nice map there then do it in ze tools.
Character Editor, FLowgraph an such help you soo much. Plus the asset creation is easier and more confortable. You can use more polys and high res textures. The Docs are top and so on. So to say BF2 Modders are unskilled is a bit to hard i think.

Look at mods like "couruscant skyline" or "The dark times: Rising son" (its created by you :D )
so you know how skilled our modders are. And if you watch the 3d modeling thread you will find some good work to :)

Yeah, that's why I feel comfortable saying it. I've played, like, everything that this community has made. It's average at best. That's not the sleight it probably sounds like, though. Like you mention, the tools aren't as complete as some other tools. We've also got a small group of people, most of whom have very little experience in doing any of this kind of work. I have a great deal of respect for the effort it takes to teach yourself how to model/script and do it with some degree of success, but that doesn't diminish the amateurish end products that come out of neophytes (of which I am one myself).

Take a look at something like ModDB's "Mod of the Year" awards (or even the Top 100). Those are good mods. You'll see communities there that are actually quite talented. A lot of that has to do with experience and size, but still, they're objectively producing better end products.

Edit: I am an idiot. I initially edited noMatt's post instead of posting one myself. Derp.

Skyrim. As much as I love the NV modding community and being a part of it, Skyrim's just seems to work better together.

Despite having worse tools to work with. *shrugs*

I agree. This community has few people with professional-level skills in modeling, texturing, etc. But in my opinion, that just makes the work we do even more admirable and heartfelt.

Speaking of AT-ATs, (sorta) I hope that in the new game the AT-ATs are bigger and more detailed than in the previous games. No offense to those ones, but they were kinda...sad. :|

Yeah, EA's confirmed Battlefront will be there. Curious they've listed it as Battlefront III when EA have taken the time to stress that this is not going to be Battlefront III but a reboot of the franchise.
