Re: SWBF3 Announced
Fiodis, I don't know if you've noticed, but there have been a LOT of Same Name Reboots lately. Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider, Sim City, and those are just recent big names, plenty of others. I'm guessing it will just be called Star Wars Battlefront, no number or name. If they feel it's good for a reboot, I'm all behind that.

Re: SWBF3 Announced
Oh, I didn't say it was a bad thing. And actually I haven't noticed all those reboots. That is, I noticed they came out, but I was never much into the old Tomb Raider or DMC or Sim City, so it somehow didn't register for me that they were entire reboots rather than continuing a saga.THEWULFMAN wrote:Fiodis, I don't know if you've noticed, but there have been a LOT of Same Name Reboots lately. The original Battlefront didn't have playable Jedi when it came out, IIRC. But that was a long time ago.Cleb wrote:Umm... Why would there not be Jedi?noMatt wrote:But i want jedi's to be there

Re: SWBF3 Announced
What's a "reboot" in the context of a game without a story (same as Sim City 5)? I submit that the word, while fashionable, has no application to something that has no continuity to reboot.

I knew that, I have that game. I was confused at why nomatt was saying that there'd be jedi when it (at least to me) is obvious that there will probably be jedi.Fiodis wrote:The original Battlefront didn't have playable Jedi when it came out, IIRC. When it comes to video games, in my eyes reboots are often more of revivals of a long dead series rather than a reset of the story. Sim City (5) came out a decade after Sim City 4. Same with this SWBF "reboot." With Tomb Raider, it was only five years, however there it's story driven. Same case with DMC as with Tomb Raider.

See this today just brought me to visit Gametoast for the first time in 3+ years - the kid side in me is squealing right now.
I haven't bought a game in what seems like forever, but I might make an exception for this one.

Re: SWBF3 Announced
Since a lot of us seem to want some form of modification in the future, perhaps some kind of campaign can be made. Something like a gentle "This would be one of our most top features requested kind of things".

To me, it sounded kinda like he was saying, "we could do mod support, but we're to lazy to spend time on it." But I hope the future he was mentioning is very close.Twilight_Warrior wrote:Battlefield 4 Mod Support Ruled Out by DICE

Re: SWBF3 Announced
It's ruled out because Frostbite is an incredibly complex engine. Imagine user-created buildings, you'd need to make whole lot of models for it to work right. You'd need to make animations for when they fall if they fall, etc. That being said, environments are the only part I really see an issue with. But DICE probably doesn't wanna just give out their dev tools or else people will make hacks, so I'd imagine they would want to make their own tools first.Cleb wrote:To me, it sounded kinda like he was saying, "we could do mod support, but we're to lazy to spend time on it." Also, it took 3 years for some people to reverse-engineer BC2 and make very very simple mod tools for it, and even then you can only make minor edits. I'm sure DICE understands that SWBF has had a very active modding community over the last 9 years, so if they want to make it right, I'm sure they'll wanna make mod tools.

Re: SWBF3 Announced
I got offended by them basically saying their development tools are over the heads of modders. After reflecting on it a bit (and reading more on their blog) I think they were indicating that the structure of their dev team is critical to leveraging the full power of their tools. That it would be impractical to expect reasonable quality mods without maintaining a similar development structure. (Impractical meaning it would take way too long for folks to learn the structure and implement it.)Fluffy_the_ic wrote:It's ruled out because Frostbite is an incredibly complex engine. I agree and disagree. If their pipeline is terribly complex, then heavily undocumented tools could only confuse the matter and lead to simple re-skin type stuff. But there are some sharp modders out there, and every now and then, folks that can organize do dedicate themselves to non-profit modding. Teams come out of nowhere and suddenly another indi developer is born. (see also Narbacular Drop by Nuclear Monkey Software) -edit: this isn't a good example of modders turned pro, but a fantastic example of humble dedication to a project becoming a very rewarding experience.
I wouldn't expect any kind of mod tools from them though. Years of development (on the engine) and piles of licenses on top of them, it just doesn't seem likely. There are to many committee run entities in charge to make it possible.

When I heard that a new SWBF was announced, the first thought I had was "I wonder what the discussion about this is over at Gametoast?"

Re: SWBF3 Announced
Star Wars: Battlefront (Final Title) is coming to PC, XBO, and PS4. It is also being made by DICE at Stockholm for the most part.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013- ... -should-be
Couple ground rules involving a DICE made Battlefront as far as I'm concerned (These are MY opinions):
-There will be no mod tools, with good reason. Frostbite 3 is far too complex.
-Bots will most likely not return. Multiplayer will be online with players only.
-Singleplayer will more than likely have a fleshed out story mode now.
I would say those three are definite. Though, bots my return, who knows. I, for one, am extremely excited for a DICE made Battlefront. I've dreamed about what it would be like for years and years, but I never thought it would happen after DICE was bought by EA. Now that it is a reality is sorta mind blowing.
Gametoast might unfortunately have to hang up the modding community coat for the new Battlefront, and just become the best group of players out there. A force to be reckoned with.

Re: SWBF3 Announced
I read somewhere that the devs said Frostbite 3 scales down really well (Need For Speed interview?) and so it can run well on current-gen systems, too. Though unannounced, I'm hoping for a 360 release. If not I have no plans to buy it anytime shortly after launch.

Does this mean no single player Instant Action? That was one of the things that set it apart from Battlefield.
