Helping out a friend pick a laptop

Post by Twilight_Warrior »

Hey guys,
I'm helping one of my friends pick out her laptop for college. She's got a few questions and, admittedly, I don't exactly know how to answer...
SO, maybe you people can help.
Do you know anything about ACER laptops? Walmart has this package deal right now where you can pick a computer, printer, case, wireless mouse, and flash drive. I haven't bought anything yet, but the computer I tentatively picked out has a 5 star customer rating so I thought it might be decent but I really have no idea. The ones I picked out came to $424 which seems pretty reasonable.

Acer Black 15.6" Aspire AS5253-BZ893 Laptop PC with AMD C-50 Processor and Windows 7 Home Premium

Think I should do it or keep looking?
Then a few minutes later
Another question for you. How much memory should I look for? (This one has 250GB.) I feel like I'm making myself look really dumb asking you all these questions-I just don't have a lot of computer knowledge besides how to use them!
Are there any brands that you've had bad experiences with or just heard a lot of bad things about and that I should stay away from? Any that are exceptionally great? (I don't want a mac!)
Anyways thanks for your help!
Please keep in mind, she's not a computer person, she just needs one to do homework and browse the web and stuff. Essentially, all I need is "Yes, it is probably good enough." or "No, Acers are crap." Because I don't know, myself, if Acers are a reasonable choice for a budget.

I have and I am typing on right now, an Acer netbook. I mod on it, I use it for everything, I got it an external portable DVD drive, and this thing is awesome. The only drawback is its small, so lack of CPU power, and it seems to overheat easily, but I recommend them and I love Acer. They are also very affordable.

Ask her if there are any ASUS laptops for sale. If so, please provide a link. Not that Acer is bad or anything, but I think ASUS is better.

ASUS are most likely better than Acer, but they are much more expensive. Acer is a good balance of capability and price.

All I needed was a yes or no for the Acer and TWM provided me with a yes. I had to respond to her, so I already gave her a green light for the Acer. It's been ordered, sorry.
