Problem with WMV file

Post by Darth_Squoobus »

Ok, so I'm trying to view a WMV file, which is the standard file for windows media player, and even with the latest version, it won't work. What's wrong?

What exactly happens when you try to view it?

The file you are attempting to play has an extension (.wmv) that does not match the file format. Playing the file may result in unexpected behavior.
That's what happens.

As far as I know it is impossible to have a WMV file that Window Media Player can't play. What might be the problem is that it probably isn't a WMV file, someone just put that extension on it. You need to know where the file came from, and what codec it was encoded with. From there I could tell you what to download to be able to watch it.

Right click on one of your .wmv files exhibiting this behavior and choose Properties. Go to the Details tab, and look over the various settings. There should be several pages of stuff, including information about video, audio, media, etc. It would be great if you could list what it shows here. Look for any indication that you have a file that isn't actually a .wmv file but which is named to look like one.

I get those all the time from limewire and Utorrent downloads, they usually are encoded or viruses that have had their format changed to .wmv although they arent and they just execute messy code. I didint read the rest of your post but i hope this info is helpful. i get wmv and .avi files 50% of them from the torrents are crap/virus/trojanny
