It's just a traditional and easy cutoff point. We lock the topics so that no topic has too many posts (this is apparently bad for the forum).

So, I was working on its weapons, and I took a glamor shot.

It has to do with indexing and pulling the data from the database. The bigger the topic, the slower the retrieval. Staff cut things off at 100 pages because that's a nice round number. Really we should probably cut it off long before then. High speed users won't notice much of a difference at all, but 56k folks see a big change, and we still have some users on dialup.
