I had to read that for my literature class last year... never liked it. I'm not much of a fan of Shakespeare.redgroupclan wrote:I must be reading Romeo and Juliet now.

Shakespeare can be pretty rough to get through at times, but I've found it fairly enjoyable if I'm reading it in a small class with lots of discussion. It really helps clarify the basic details and bring out the deeper meanings in everything.Ping wrote:Probably 'cause you can't understand 90% of what he's saying.Nova Hawk wrote:I had to read that for my literature class last year... never liked it. Re: What are you Reading right now?
Agreed. We just read Caesar in class, and we all acted out roles. Perhaps reading it alone isn't very fun (which is what killed a Midsummer Night's Dream for me), but in class it was awesome. Perhaps this positive attitude is why I'm doing so well in English.Eggman wrote:Shakespeare can be pretty rough to get through at times, but I've found it fairly enjoyable if I'm reading it in a small class with lots of discussion. Re: What are you Reading right now?
I just finished The Stranger by Albert Camus. It was an interesting perspective on how to look at life, but I did not agree with the philosophy of existentialism. I want some time to finish reading Tom Clancy's Power Plans, but school is impeding that sought time...

Exactly. I'm not much for love stories or tragedies, I'm much more of a action/comedy/adventure type person.Ping wrote:Probably 'cause you can't understand 90% of what he's saying.Nova Hawk wrote:I had to read that for my literature class last year... never liked it. Shakespearean comedies exist too you know. A Midsummer Night's Dream, as Grev mentioned earlier, would be one and it is also a love story. And with any tragedy, action usually plays a part.

Well, when I am forced to read a book (English class) I do somewhat enjoy it. A Midsummer Night's Dream was a pretty pleasant book to read. And I also enjoyed Othello.
And actually, I even enjoyed reading Crime & Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky..
I just don't read outside of school

Yeah, I loved that book, I thought the first half was hilarious, and the entire book has so much going on beyond the basic text.Dohnutt wrote: And actually, I even enjoyed reading Crime & Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky..

Re: What are you Reading right now?
O Hai!
Lets see... Over the past year in my English class, I've read:
Macbeth--Shakespeare; short, tedious, but otherwise enjoyable.
Persuasion--Jane Austen; much better than I thought, as well as more enjoyable than I pictured an Austen book to be. (Spoiler: If you're still a 12-year-old guy who's afraid of cooties, you SHOULD NOT read this book)
A Tale of Two Cities--Charles Dickens; incredible book. Of all the books I've read, this one by far has one of the deepest plots, greatest characters, and most incredible plot twists. A must read.
Ivanhoe--Sir Walter Scott; another incredible book. Great plot, characters, as well as good humor in many parts of it. I really have no criticisms for it.

@Nova Hawk: If you have not already, YOU MUST READ the last two books on that list.Nova Hawk wrote:Exactly. I'm not much for love stories or tragedies, I'm much more of a action/comedy/adventure type person.

Reading "The Winter King" by Bernard Cornwell.
Bernard Cornwell is a historical fiction author (in this book, heavy on the fiction), most of his work has something to do with Britan in the Middle Ages.

Dost thou dare question the divine works of Shakespeare??Ping wrote:Probably 'cause you can't understand 90% of what he's saying.Nova Hawk wrote:I had to read that for my literature class last year... never liked it. For thou are more intemperate in blood than Venus!
I think he might mean comedies that you actually laugh at. Shakespearean comedies aren't always necessarily funny, they're just classified as comedies if they have a happy ending.AQT wrote:Shakespearean comedies exist too you know. ...I think.
Hey, I've got English at 7 in the morning and I have an listening problem.

Re: What are you Reading right now?
I imagine they were easily recognizable as comedies back in his day, since the jokes were more relevant to the culture. Some of it could even be considered pretty vulgar.redgroupclan wrote:Dost thou dare question the divine works of Shakespeare??Ping wrote:Probably 'cause you can't understand 90% of what he's saying.Nova Hawk wrote:I had to read that for my literature class last year... never liked it. Edit: Of all places to discuss Shakespeare, I can't believe I'm doing it on GT.

I'm currently reading Where Men Win Glory by Jon Krakauer. Great book. This is one of those instances where I shrug off my hatred of football. It's the story of Pat Tillman, many Americans may have heard of him.
I'm also reading Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers. Also a good book so far.

If you're into Russian literature, you should check out this. Films were also made, although I recommend the books before the film.
