Music Reviews

Talk to us about music you've bought, what you'd suggest, and what you are expecting.

NOTHING ABOUT ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING

Coldplay: Viva La Vida
While not a very "new" cd, I just listened to it recently, and it easily surpasses their older works.... by a lot. First of all, they seem to have a new style almost, and most of their songs have a second part at the end, several minutes long that is like a song in itself. Also, there are some contrasts between styles in the actual songs, some I found for instance in the song "Yes", and while it was awkward at first, it was very interesting in the long run.

I'd suggest this for anyone.

AC/DC: Black Ice:

I will most likely get flamed just for questioning AC/DC, but personally, in 10 years, they could have choked up something MUCH better. Some weaknesses were that some songs could be so much more, but so little was put into it. Some of these songs seemed bland and repetitive, never gaining speed or volume. A lot of new ideas have been presented though, which was interesting. And since music popularity changes, its hard for an old band to release something thats "with the times".

A must for a die hard AC/DC fan, but, maybe not so much for a listener looking for something new.

Yeah, I wasn't impressed with Black Ice. But then again I don't really like any of these old bands that come out with new stuff. Journey is another good example of that. Aerosmith and U2 are probably the only 2 bands that have stood the test of time, and even they aren't that great anymore.

And because I know someone will mention Metallica, go ahead and listen to the Death Magnetic album and you'll see why they didn't make my cut.

Captain Morgan's Revenge - Alestorm

A friend of mine recommended this to me about a month ago. I listened to some of it on Napster and liked it. I was in HMV the other day and saw it. The CD I was looking for wasn't there, so I got this instead. They're a pirate metal band. I hate short sentences like that. Anyway, I'd recommend it.

Tean, I actually got Death Magnetic, basically it was a load of repetition. The two songs I really liked were Unforgiven III ( I've liked each Unforgiven song), and The Day that never comes. One of the major cons is the length. I can't sit and listen to one song for 7 minutes.

David Cook - David Cook

Honestly I expected a lot more from the debut album from this guy, considering the originality and flair he showed during American Idol.
All in all it's an okay debut album. It reeks of Daughtry, but it still makes some nice rock.
My personal favorite song from it was Declaration, which David teamed up with John Rzeznick (lead singer of the Goo Goo Dolls).

Lennie Kravitz: Love Revolution
While I expected very little of this CD, it was actually very good. The songs were interesting, and some arrangements were new. While on the most part everything was almost in his same style, some things really popped out: in a good way. While not the best CD, I can't really find any glaring faults. The notable track: Track 3 was interesting in the sense that it was almost a parody of new teen bands, with a segment that was optimistic and sung in a teen almost beatles-ish voice, and another part that was abit more realistic and in Lenny's actual voice. Nice song.

Notable Tracks: Track 3 "Good Morning"

I really enjoy Christian Rock music, some of my favorite bands are Matthew West, Sanctus Real, and Seven Glory. One song I recommend is You know where to find me - Matthew West track 5 on album Happy.

I listen to a lot of music on Pandora.com while I'm working on the Internet. If you've never heard of Pandora its a free Internet radio site where you create your own stations and share them with others along with a lot of other cool stuff. Its a really great site and I recommend it.

Chalk another one up for Grev! :P

Well, heres the Metallica: Death Magnetic Review. Cindi Lauper's new cd review soon!

Metallica: Death Magnetic

Well, while I expected loads from this, it really wasn't that great. Metallica has taken a new path in its song style, in the way that they make it insanely long. I think their shortest song was around 5 minutes, and on average the songs were 7 minutes long. While some songs were really good, others seemed to be repeats of the other songs, from other cd's and this cd. Their good songs however, leveled it out, as the songs that you could sit through were an incredible listening experience. And in fact, some songs that I liked were really simple, like Unforgiven III and The Day That Never Comes. Simple, not grinding the guitar, with several chords, but overall incredible sound.

Notable Songs: The Day that Never Comes
Unforgiven III

Liked Viva La Vida so much I got Parachutes (also by Coldplay) and liked it more. I want to listen to them right after another one time to do a full review of them and decide which is better, but I can't find the Viva La Vida CD. :(

Recommended songs in Parachutes;
Don't Panic
Spies
Yellow

Coldplay is the only "new" music I listen to, so I'll just review other stuff.

Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd.
For those who haven't heard this album from beginning to end, you're really missing out. I could go on forever about why I like this music, and I just might. :) One of the most noticeable things about DSOM is that it's a gapless album. The songs blend into one another, changing ideas seamlessly. The songs carry significant meaning, just compare the lyrics from songs like Time or Money to Van Halen's Panama or Boston's Smokin. Another ability the band seems to have is to change the tone of the instruments to perfectly match the song. Other bands will often leave the tone of the guitar the same for multiple songs, leading to grating solos with huge amounts of friction with the other instruments. Not so here. 11/10 stars! :D

I'm gonna take a different spin -- songs I got turned onto/learned to hate by Guitar Hero/Rock Band.

 Paramore - That's What You Get (Rock Band 2) -- Supposedly this band is popular, but they don't play em' on anything but Radio Disney here in Indy. Good tune though.

Image Bob Dylan - Tangled Up In Blue (Rock Band 2) -- Bob Dylan sucks. Period. But when you're forced to play one of his tunes you learn to hate him more.

 OK Go - Here It Goes Again (Rock Band 2) -- Knew the tune, never knew what the title/artist was. Fun little tune.

Image Lamb of God - Laid to Rest (Guitar Hero 2) -- If it wasn't enough that the artist's name mocks something I hold dear... It's death metal too, which is talentless noise to me.

:? DragonForce - Thru The Fire And The Flames (Guitar Hero 3) -- I hate this whole "I learned to love DragonForce from Guitar Hero" thing. Their music ain't that good. It was just the toughest song in the game. (Same thing happened with the Buckethead song in Guitar Hero 2)

 Primus - John the Fisherman (Guitar Hero 2) -- I used to listen to Primus when it was on the radio back in the day, but I never heard this song. It's got that classic Primus awesomeness.

Image David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust (Guitar Hero) -- I HATE this song. Pretty much the same reasons as the Dylan song near the top.

 Cream - Crossroads (Guitar Hero) -- Ahhh, young Eric Clapton stuff. How did I miss this song all these years?

 Molly Hatchet - Flirtin' With Disaster (Rock Band) -- Another great classic rock song where I knew the tune but not the artist or title

Tean, it takes some time to like Bob Dylan. And David Bowie I didn't like until I'd listened to him thoroughly.

Ill try to get a review up of Cindi Lauper's new CD: Bring Ya to The Brink.

Oh I've tried... many times. I used to have my own DJ company for ~6 years, and I'm almost 30, so I've "been around the musical block".
