Best FREE video editing software

I buckled down and got the registered version of Fraps. It was so cheap I couldn't resist. But now I'm hunting for a decent, free video editor. I want to be able to do transitions from one clip to another, as well as do text intos/outros, and text overlay on the game footage itself.

Also, does anyone know of a good DivX editor? Every time I slice up DivX files with editors I've tried it ruins the sync of the audio.

I use Vista's window's movie maker. Maybe it's downloadable too.

Then you've got an awesome free program which let's you import, and compress, while keeping the audio, and edit and merge loads of vids..

Yeah, I've used Vdub before. I didn't like it at all, but if that's the best one out there I'll figure it out.

... I use windows movie maker, and it's a piece of [Diet Pepsi]. My birthday's coming up and I asked for any movie making program that's not WMM, so heck, if I get a good one, I'll tell ya what it is.

I guess it's what you like, and what you're used too..

I learned to use WMM on school, and Vdub was free so i tried it and it worked out quite nice

Supposedly this one is good one. I haven't tried it but, it's being actively maintained, which is a good sign.

Like Caleb said, Movie Maker for Vista is pretty good - better than its XP counterpart. It doesn't have all the features you listed (or that I'd like) in an editing program, like a good set of transitions, but it is decent for simple splicing operations.

Yeah, no Linux stuff, otherwise I'd have to dual boot.

My limited movie making experience has been with old Windows Movie Maker.

WMM is easy to use, but very unreliable. When I made my Hoth Tribute which spans over ten minutes, I had to deal with several unexplainable crashes and limitations. The worst part was trying to export the video - It just wouldn't do it! Every time when it was almost done it would break down. To fix this I had to split up the movie in two files, export them separately and later combine them into one movie again. Annoying!

I have had that happen so many times. So I Googled the problem and found out it had to do with bad codecs.

Its not free, but my friend got a copy of Vegas 8 for Christmas and it really rocks! You can get a lower cost version for like $70 I believe.

Vegas is a sweet program.
You need a pretty good computer to run it fast though

OK then the only others ones are Linux programs. You could make a small partition, edit your videos, then move them to Windows?
