KotOR problem, it won't install

No need to feel sorry as I was going to buy one anyway. I've got the SWBFII DVD version and wasn't able to play it because the old DVD player broke down.

The_Emperor, maybe I should have warned you about this sort of Findings and Statements earlier, but I had already attempted to install and execute a whole new Copy of Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic on a Personal Computer being aged of more than five years, and I have to say that the Procedures having to be followed before being eventually able to try your hand at mastering a Star Wars®-related Role-Playing Game have not been that tough to achieve, which means that the concerned LucasArts® had been expanded properly on a Microsoft® Windows-based Platform being certainly much more Obsolete than your current one !...

Hmmm... It didn't work on my 9 year old computer either (what a surprise) but the curious part was that it gave the exact same error message...
There's one last option, being my fathers laptop. Thats the final resort, Imma test it right away.

Off-topic : I has progressively appeared that the most extended Network we are almost all usually exploiting is way far from behaving as a simple Knowledge Base gathering Informations and Resources on Subjects we would like to learn more about, which means we could succeed in finding sort of "Workaround" intended to get rid off the Restriction you have mentioned earlier, or perhaps even getting your hands down on the exact Password protecting the concerned Laptop, but I would firstly want to know whether this one is required at the initiating of one Microsoft® Windows XP User Account or not...

You're S.O.L. on that one bub. It is a very common problem and secuROM is the culprate. What is most likely happening is it is detecting a burner somewhere (cd or dvd) or emulator and it is not liking it. There are ways to circumevent it, but I won't tell you exactly how because of legal issues (not you doing it, but others who don't own it would be able to).

I found a blog that described the same thing:

and browse around cdmediaworld to understand how it works (interesting insites to these pain in the rear DRMs about what is goin on in the background to understand why everyone hates it). But to save ya some browsing and searching time on something that can be tested simply, do this (only if you have a regular run of the mills cd-rom drives laying around):

1. Close ALL cd emulation software and make sure they are not running in the background, i.e. daemon tools, nero (virtual drive parts), alcohol 120%, etc. (no virtual drives should be installed either. I mean total "Im gone and you can't find me cause Im hiding" shut down. not nessessary to uninstall them, but would be recommended just in case.)
2. turn off the machine and unplug any burners, ide and power.
3. restart the comp and try to install it again.

Again, last resort, uninstall all emulation software, or software that have it as a feature, if it doesn't work to make sure. (cause it is a pain in the rear to reinstall some. Too time consuming).

If that doesn't work, pm me and I'll tell you how to get it working (hopefully). If it does, post here so others are not left out in the blue.

Oh and good luck getting LA or the makers of secuROM to admit they made a mistake and have to recall millions of discs back for a pretty much outdated game. (I hate corps. for that very reason.)

nother note, make sure you have the software disks and key codes for them before uninstalling them. I'm not going to be responsible for WWIII.

Thank you all for the advice, but it aint working guess I'm forced to get the game the dark-side way now cause I really want to play it (allready arranged it, getting it friday)

Just wanted to say, in case other people encounter the same problem, that I'm pretty sure ShadowHawks advice would have worked, if I wouldn't have had 2 burners and no normal CD/DVD drives

Off-topic : Wait a moment : According to the Precise Details I may have looked at through this thread, it seems that you have ever been able to recognize and explore the content of the additional Storage Mediums shipped with your Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic Copy, which has incidentally led me to think that if this LucasArts® Product was supposed to be as much protected as announced, then all the concerned CD's would have undergone a Treatment comparable to the one you have faced Troubles with, and that's why I ceaselessly keep thinking that these problems are actually caused by this same Entity...

Yes, the other CD's work, only the play disk is protected. Its effictive enough to only protect disk 1, for the other disks merely say "please insert play disk 1", and are only needed once for installing the game. Without disk 1, the other ones are useless.

Off-topic : I do not think so, since the supplementary Compact Discs present inside your own Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic Copy's Set are supposed to contain Microsoft® CABinet files which are basically intended to store Resources and Stuffs required by the concerned BioWare Corporation® Product, and that's why they should have all taken advantage out of the Prevention Means embedded into the first Storage Medium of this same Video Game. Therefore, be sure that something must have possibly gone wrong with the Complete Integrity of the LucasArts® Design you have attempted to install so far...

Well, the advice I gave him can be exploited by others who have obtained KOTOR in a less than desirable and completely illegal way and, considering my chosen field of study, I choose not help others that have done so in any way. So I will leave those that have done said illegal and purely distasteful and wrong way to the wonderful and painstakingly misurable method of googling it and dodging malware, spyware, spam, virii, the FBI, and INTERPOL in order to get a long and tedious process when just purchasing it would have been less stressful and more fulfilling.

For those rednecks like me; hell no!
