Roller Coaster Tycoon Series

Post by RevanSithLord »

The Roller Coaster Tycoon series has been a favorite series of mine in the Tycoon franchise games, next to Railroad Tycoon.

For anyone who's interested in RTS's with nothing but explosions, gunfire, and tons of action, this may not be for you. This series is all about micromanaging funds, building rides and various other attractions, along with hiring staff and launching advertising campaigns of sorts to draw in guests to the parks.

I suppose you COULD have explosions if you had all your Roller Coaster trains fly off the track and blow up the nearest concession stand injuring and/or killing as many civilians as possible, but come on...that's just messed up if you wanted to do that! Plus a majority of the park guests are kids.

Moving on, some very interesting coaster designs can be made, along with creating a beautiful landscape and effective park layout. I promote any screenshots from the games to be posted here, should anyone here have any interesting designs they want to promote. The Tycoon game franchise (Prison Tycoon, Mall Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon, Railroad Tycoon, Rollercoaster Tycoon and any other game with 'Tycoon' in the title) is an example that you don't HAVE to have violence in a game to have fun!

I would post snapshots here, but I don't know the key for RTC3. I know there's "Take Snapshot" in the original and second one, but I don't know where it put those pictures at. I only have the first (RTC1 and both expansions) and third games (RTC3 Gold, only one out of two expansions included. Wish I had the other). I guess I can find out where they are by browsing. There's the search function in Windows for a reason. :)

Anyways, I look forward to hearing about peoples' experiences and seeing possible screenshots of rides and such. :D Those that own the games, that is. If people were checking it out and are on the fence, I'd totally get them. But that's just me, I guess!

Ahhh, I have loved this series for nearly ten years and continue to love it to this day!

If you wanna take screenshots, I'd suggest downloading and installing Fraps.

Yeah, I have Fraps installed. I just wanted to know if I could use a default in-game screenshot button. But I can either use Fraps or Xfire as options. Though X-fire tends not to work with original RCT, but it does with RCT3.

Fraps would probably be a safer bet, I'll agree. :)

I've loved the RCT games ever since I played the first one in elementary school. I don't know about RCT1 and 2, but I know that RCT3 has controls built in to take screenshots and record videos. Just check out the controls in the options menu.

Here are some screenshots of a few coasters I've built over the last year in RCT3:

And here's a video of the wooden coaster in action (no sound or anything - I just made it to get a bit of feedback on the layout from a few people on another site):

Most of the supports/scenery items are custom objects created by community members. There are several great community sites out there if anyone is interested in checking what other people have made. There some incredibly talented people out there.

The first two games of the series were great. I played them both to death back in the day. The third one, though, while I enjoyed it, didn't appeal to me as much. It's almost as if it's a different series, entirely. New engine, new terrain generation new mechanics, thousands of new features. I'm not saying it was bad, I loved playing in sandbox mode and riding my coasters that I built from all three games. But it was such a step away from the first two that it was almost a turn-off.

^I definitely agree with that. RCT3 is a great game in its own right, but it is a massive step away from RCT2. The game lost a bit of its simple charm with the transition to 3D.

Yes, these, exactly. I appreciate Atari having tried to continue the series, but they knew where to quit and they did just that. It's that aspect that I love to see in developers.

I agree with all of the above. I still love the series; in fact, I was playing RCT2 about a week ago! Most of my coasters are terrible desing failures. :P
