Steam on Linux (anyone gotten it working?)

Linux version of Steam is out.
And so, there's deals on Linux games.
And an item for TF2 if you play it on Linux.
<-- Click the penguin.
So... I've got a basically clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 on a Virtualbox VM, and I can't get Steam to install. Well, it says it's installed, but it has to do an update before it can do... anything... and it always fails. with "Fatal Error: Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again." Sometimes it does this immediatly, sometimes it actually downloads a few GB first, but it always starts over from 0. Solutions I've googled are delete the .pid file, and edit a file called registry.vdf, which I can't find anywhere... so... I'm assuming my school network is just too slow?
Anyone else tried to install yet?
EDIT: Well, 2 of my friends are saying the Windows version is having exactly the same error message as my Linux one, so... could be a Steam problem too.
