Anyways it turns out that the issue was that the lowres model was covering the highres one, so a couple years ago I went ahead and hid the lowres model in the mesh so that you can actually see the proper model. I haven't seen this anywhere else so I thought I should share it here:

You could probably load the mesh in the turret side to get it to appear fixed in game for quick implementation.
