the first time i recognized this was about 2-3 years ago, but didnt mind. now, as i decided to try to keep the BF2 interest going and keep modding, i really want to know what the file is. in the gamorrean side folder, in REQ, look at the file vssver.scc - why is it there? this question is pointed at Maveritchell, DarthD.U.C.K, Teancum, FragMe!, AQT or any other of the very experienced programmers. what is this!? i removed it, munged, started battlefront, launched the map and, as the loading reached max, Gave Me A Blue Screen and formatted the D:\ Disk (Wich luckily is my gaming disk, and not the program files.) luckily i had a backup copy of bf2 with all mods and files on C:\, and on my memory stick i have a backup of the modtools with all addons i ever downloaded (12/16 GB), so nothing important was lost. but what is this thing with the file! now it has copied itself 16000 times (Has its own folder, says 16000 files) and ive scanned it with 11 different antivirus programs! (AVG, Norton, AOL, BitDefender, Chart, ESET NOD32, G Data 2010, MCafee 2010, WebRoot, KasperSky 2010, Vanguard*) and they all say its nothing! if i include it when i munge it uses 5 hours, and when its done it says the .lvl file is 4 GB!!!! Help?
*Software my dad's working on, hasnt got a good name yet.
EDIT - copied itself 52000 times
EDITEDIT - 160000 times!!! tried formatting, now made a folder on the C:\ Disk and its still duplicating!!! Its like an infection!!!*
*whats with the time and date on this site? gone 5 days since i uploaded this, still says its its only gone a few minutes!
EDITEDITEDIT - i looked through the processes on my comp, found a unknown file - what is a mutex? ive heard of mutant processes... take a look =
**
**look at the lenght of the slider on the right
and why would they give us viruses?
Please take a look and see if you have the same file - i redownloaded the mod tools just to find the same file, now i have two folders, one in each disk, that duplicates its contents.
EDITEDITEDITEDIT(lol) ok thanks, please move this thread to the technical advice thread. what i did to make it start duplicating, was first: edited the gamorrean side, from textures to odf to req to .lvl. :second: set up a thread here about what the file could be :third: without waiting for an answer, munged. it came up with an error, but i though it was an warning so i didnt care. i started bf2 and launched mos eisley, and got the BSOD. i couldnt read what the error was because of the disk formatting. THEN, when i had re-installed the disk partition, the file showed up. it was in the middle of the folder (WHAT? i thought) and stayed there for about 1 minute. then it started to take more space! from one kb i watched as it reached 9 mb! then it duplicated. then again! then again..! then again. then it stopped. i thought, "cant be anything special"***, so i didnt care. then the next day, it had quadrupled! i thought "Wohoah, id better ask the pro's about this" and did. i dont think it has anything to do with me deleting the file, since a while back i managed to do the amazing, deleting the trashcan. so i dont think thats the cause, but if you can tell me where the trashcan usually is placed on the computer, except for desktop, i will see if its still there.

The name sounded familiar to me, and so I checked - I also have it, but it's not doing anything (at least, nothing visible). I'd recommend opening a new thread or having a staff member move this one to the Technical Advice and Tutorials forum. I'm anxious to see what turns up.

Can you restate exactly what you did to make this file do this? I want to try to replicate this error.

In short its not a virus, but when you delete it, it acts like one. It's a Visual Studio Source Control file. Most likely a legacy holdover from the creation of the ModTools. Just don't delete it and you will be fine. However their are some viruses and malware that exploit it to ruin systems and there are ways of removing it without problems.
Google searching tends to help.

So if I had uninstalled the modtools, would that have counted as deleting it, or is that different? Just making sure, because I would rather have it not doing anything to my D Drive.

Re: Back to modding - Gamorrean side, Weird file, Virus?
Uninstalling the ModTools via Control Panel>Remove Programs will be fine, as it follows all necessary steps to remove the entire toolset. Deleting that file specifically on its own is the issue.

ok... im confused.. is this solved or not?
yukisuna, why do you edit the first post as a reply to what other users say? Posting after someone else's post is not a double post if thats what you are thinking.
