What are you running? Linux?
While I don't have a Mac, I'm sure OSX has a video editing software... Macs are like the god of entertainment, so there should be SOMETHING on there that can edit vids.
And Windows has Windows Movie Maker...

Macs have iMovie.
As for alternatives/better software, there's Sony Vegas. I hear it's one of the best, but it does cost money.

Doesn't it cost
OVER 9000 cents? (In other words, is the cost a three-digit number?)

I wouldn't pay for movie software. The free programs I use are
Windows live movie maker and to make the caption and title edits I use
adobe after effects. Adobe after effects is a great intro software, you will need it if you wanna make a real video

But the free version is the trial right? If so, that only lasts for 30 days.
Also,
Wax 2.0 is pretty good, if sometimes slightly difficult to handle, and 100% free.
