I'm looking to upgrade from my 5 year old photoshop software, and I would prefer to be able to install it to both a mac and pc. I heard that Adobe Elements 8 was good from my friend, but I have no idea what the newer photoshops are. Does anyone have a newish photoshop that they like?

I recommend GIMP as an alternative (opensource ftw)

PSE8 is the best PS program you can get for your money, it only lacks a few unimportant (to modding) features from CS4, and it comes really cheap, usually.

Wait, is
photoshop a generic term for image editting/manipulating now?

No, he's just asking which version of photoshop to get.

Errm, I disagree. I beg to differ. Go with Creative Suite or go home, IMO.

I
still use and prefer Photoshop 7 and after almost 8 years still don't have a reason to upgrade. Photoshop is expensive. So I'd recommend taking a look at whether you
need to upgrade, or if you just want to. If you just want to I'd strongly recommend using your money somewhere else. I have Photoshop CS4 at work and don't see anything better in it than I did in 7. You've got to be
really into graphic editing to need something more than old-school stuff.
If you want to see what features have been added in each major release, check
HERE. Oh, and I'd STRONGLY recommend you stay away from CS5 for now. It just came out two days ago. Wait for a few months to buy that if that's what you decide to use, that way they'll have released all the necessary patches.
Long story short, unless you're a professional graphics guy the new features are wasted on you.

Thanks, I'll stay away from the newest releases, but I'm still living with Photoshop Elements 2.0 and it looks like there are significant advances since then. CS4 looks nice, but I'll prob get something after 7. I guess it depends on price.

Or Photoshop CSI, which is able to sharpen a 4 pixel image from, say, a blurry mirror, into a highly detailed image, keeping nothing hidden. Small demonstration
here.

Haha, I hate when they do that!
