And then, I suddenly cannot install BFII

Post by Nihillo »

A few days ago I had a little problem with my HD (toasted), I had to replace it and start fresh, and so I installed BFII, downloaded the patch, the Conversion Pack, the Battlefront Extreme mod and the Dark Times mod, I installed them in that respective order and launched the game, to my surprise, the only custom maps being listed where the Conversion Pack ones.

Then I basically unistalled everything, I thought I would do well to make sure that I did not have any corrupt installations (it happened before). Now here is the weird stuff: when I tried to install the game again, it gave me an error message, stating that "launchbf2.exe" was not found. Repeated attempts to reinstall the game led to the same problem.

I tried to google it but I found no conclusive results, Lucasforums didn't give me much of an answer either (the lack of a "search" tool in their forums contributed to my inability to find anything).

So... any suggestions? Ideas? Miracles? Should I buy a new copy of BFII? What happened?

I would clean your discs and then try to run it again (without autorun). LaunchBF2.exe should be the file that starts the whole thing and exists on Disc 1. Are you even able to explore that disc?

Didn't work.

Yes.

I just noticed that some of those data# files are corrupted.

EDIT: Actually, I can't open any of the data#.cab files... I guess I'm just not supposed to do that...? Is that normal?

I had the same exact problem about a year ago, and I believe I remotely launched the installer using command prompt and it worked, but I may be mistaken.

I would translate it, but I'm pretty sure you are all familiar with that "windows could not find..." sort of error.

Ok, I think I will just settle for a new copy of the game, I have been searching for a solution to no avail. So, hum, thanks for your attention, hopefully I will be back to SWBFII in a few days.

Sorry Mav, I couldn't beta test Bakura. :?

Before you go and possibly waste some money, check to see if it installs on another computer. If it doesn't, then you should buy a new game. If it does, then you know it's something with your computer.

Alright, I'll do that. I guess I'm feeling a bit impatient.

I found out what's wrong: I got a computer virus. Or a Malware. It's pretty obvious now, almost all of my programs are behaving erratically. Oh, and by the way, my copy of Battlefront II did install correctly in a different computer.

I suspect the virus came from some files I keep in a backup DVD, I will have them properly scanned and the culprits disposed of, however I should bring to your notice that the virus did kick in after I installed all of those SWBFII mods, so I would like to request that the following mods, available for download at SWBFFiles, be double-checked for viruses and other possible threats: Conversion Pack, Battlefront Extreme and Dark Times.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, I'm sure the SWBFFiles staff is very cautious and competent when it comes to this, but I cannot ignore the possibility that one of those installers may be the cause of this disturbance; it's just a safety precaution.

I'm positive that it's none of those (or at least positive that it's not two of those, and just pretty sure that it's not the third), since I made two of them and uploaded them personally.

I would however be careful (make sure you have an adblocker or anti-script or something) when running anything at Filefront. I can't be 100% sure, since I do run both of the above, but I've heard that from time to time there are some sketchy ads that run from the Filefront network sites. If you are concerned, your concern may be best directed there. I know that the staff that controls those ads is very attentive to whether ads are good/bad, so if you are able to pinpoint something that's goofy, be sure to let them know.

From my experiences, having a program like Norton, or any other will save a month or so of headaches.
