Frequent Freezing After Installing Wireless Adapter

Post by AQT »

I'm having this computer problem. After installing a Linksys PCI wireless adapter on my computer (running Vista), my computer frequently freezes and the screen turns into something like this:

So I have to turn it off and then on again. After doing this and sometimes after the Microsoft Corporation loading bar, the computer doesn't even start up at all. I also have the same kind of adapter installed my other computer (running XP) without any problems.
No error messages appear or anything else at all. Could it be hardware damage? Any help would be appreciated.

How did you install the driver? Install disk? Drivers from the internet?

You probably need to find a Vista compatible driver for the adapter. Although I'm not positive since you didn't receive a BSoD.
First of all try booting up in safe mode and uninstalling the driver. Here's a tutorial: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#03
Then go online and search for a Vista compatible driver.

That's my guess.

Thanks for the reply. I installed the driver software with the disk that came with adapter. The driver is Vista compatible, it even said "Certified for Windows Vista" on the box. However I found out yesterday while looking around online that the driver being Vista compatible is the problem! It's bugged.

So I uninstalled the driver and am in search of an XP compatible version which I can't seem to find.
