local area connection works, internet doesn't

Ok, so I have a toshiba laptop with windows xp, and I'm trying to connect to the internet via an ethernet cable to my wireless router. However, while the computer recognizes the connection, and I can succesfully ping my router's ip, I still cannot access the internet via IE or mozilla. I have tried different ethernet cables and my windows firewall settings don't appear to be interfering.
EDIT:
Thank you, the problem has been solved. I'm afraid I can't explain how, because I was not the one who solved it, and I was out at the time that it was solved. I'm afraid I can't close this topic with a solution, however, just know that, well, it has been solved XP

make sure you didn't mistype the password if your router is protected. If that doesn't work, try going to your router's webpage and and release/renew DHCP.

Is your computer configured for a static IP? If so, try changing it to getting ip/dns automaticlly. Did you try turning off your modem/router yet?

Also, does it work if you try to connect to the router via wireless?

Try resetting everything by turning everything off wait like 10-30 seconds then turn and plug everything back in.
Maybe you should try creating a new network on you laptop. That might work.

Are you able to connect to the router settings? Also, do you have mac address filtering enabled? What type of router is it?

If you can login to your router from your computer, then the problem lies with your router's connection to your ISP. Make sure your router's configuration is what it should be for your ISP. If you don't know what that is, check their website, manual, and/or call them.
How many computers do you have connected to this router?. If you have more than one, do they all not have net access or is just your laptop having problems? If you have more than one computer connected and only the laptop is having problems, then your router might not have NAT setup correctly.
Or has your problem been solved already?

Also, another random thing you can do (my connection farts out every once and awhile)
1-Go Start, Run
2-Type ipconfig /release and hit enter (this releases any current IP)
3-Repeat step 1
4-Type ipconfig /renew and hit enter (this will search for a new IP. If it finds one it'll assign it)

From what I was told, this was a problem that either fixed itself or the poster wasn't present when it was fixed. So since there is not a definate answer and won't be, I'm locking the topic.
