My Portal & Sectors don't work!

Post by xwingguy »

I created an extremely large interior for the Rebel Cruiser (yes, this is a space battle) and it causes bad lag when looking at the cruiser at the outside. I tried using portals and sectors but I still get heavy lag from the outside. I created 3 sectors: 2 hangars and the interior and connected the interior to the hangars with the portals. I then created 2 portals for each hangar that connect to the rest of the world. What did I forget to do?

I think the way the portal system works is: If you are in a sector, it will only render other sectors that you can see through portals; however, it you aren't in a sector, it renders everything. So maybe your sectors aren't helping...try creating a sector covering the entire map, and connecting the interor sectors to it via the portals you have. If that helps, then it was because you weren't in any sector before.

Also, make sure you're looking at the ship from a direction where you can't see through a portal into the hangar, then from there a portal into the interior. If you can see the interior's portal even a tiny bit, it renders that whole sector. So it might also be that you just have to divide the interior up further or tighten your portals....

So the system isn't defined by a player's location but by the player's point of view? That helps. About not being in a sector, this is what the documentation says on it:

- There is a default Sector called the World which is useful for outdoor levels that have some indoor sections. You dont need to make a gigantic enclosing Sector for the outside - just make Sectors for your indoor sections of the level. The Portals that connect to the outside region just need to be associated with one Sector. A missing link for a Portal is interpreted as a link to the World Sector.

This "World" Sector is defined as the entire map minus the Sectors that I define for the map, correct?
