I'm new to modding, and i need help

Post by Koolaid7g »

hey everyone. I'm new to modding, so I really don't understand much in the documentation. I tried the tutorial in 'getting started' and got to the point where the level files are up and running and you have to edit it in Zero editor, but when i tried loading it in, all i got was a gray screen. Also, i tried working with the templates for ground and space battles, but got nowhere.

I've attempted importing code (which is another thing i don't comprehend) but my comp can't read the .msh, .lua, etc. files.

Could someone help me get started? I'm anxious to create custom worlds and levels, and I'm very appreciative of any help.

Lua files and most others used for various SWBF2 properties can be opened as text files using notepad on your pc, once you've opened a few you'll start getting the general idea as to what they are about and eventually you'll get a feeling as to how to change the variables to suit your requirements. Other files need programs like ultra edit to edit them.

Assuming you got to the point in the docs where you are ready to start with zeroeditor and have opened it from the proper location....
In zeroed. load your world....it may look gray like you have seen. Now look in the upper right corner and find the "camera" button. Click on it. A small menu will appear in the middle of the screen. On that menu will be a button to "set top down view" or something to that effect. Click on it and then close the little menu. You should see the area of the map from a top/aerial view. You can then zoom and rotate to see the field better.

Yea, you are seeing that grayness because the editor starts you out in the middle of the ground. Angle your camera up (up arrow) then move foward (w button) for a little bit. You should now be above the ground. Angle the camera down (down arrow) to get a better view of the ground. The documentation on ZeroEditor tells you what more keyboard keys do.
