LVL Extractor should be able to do such a thing...

can it also extract other stuff? for example could you extract the SWBF 2 levels completely and then ammend (if necessary) to have them as map addons for SWBF 1 for those who haven't got the beta and can't wait.

Unfortunately, no, it can't... It is just able to extract textures (*.DDS files), static meshes (*.X files) and compiled LUA scripts. (*.LUB files)

Acually, I tried the lvl extractor. I got a total of 2-5 .dds textures no matter what lvl I opened.

LVL Extractor is a command-line utility. So, in order to use it, you must run a command-prompt and "point" to the path containing the *.LVL file to extract.
Here is some steps which might help you :
- Open the Start Menu, then go in "All programs > Accessories > Command prompt" ;
- In the MS-DOS window which should appear, enter :
Code: Select all
cd [The path where the *.LVL file you want to extract is present]
(For sample, type "cd C:\My LVL files" if you want to get the content of LVL files which are located in "C:\My LVL files".)
- After that, be sure LVL Extractor ("extract.exe") has been installed in the directory which has the LeVeL files whose content must be extracted ; Still in the MS-DOS prompt, type :
Code: Select all
extract [The name of the *.LVL file of your choice]
- Wait the end of the extraction process. Next, browse till the directory chosen in the command prompt, and you'll find a new folder named "[The name of the extracted *.LVL file]". Open it, then go in the "tex" sub-folder : It owns all textures which were compressed into the *.LVL file you chose to extract.

You've the choice between manners for opening this sort of files : You can use
nVidia Texture Tools, or
XnView or even
Microsoft DirectX SDK...

With BF1 levels, I could just drag the lvl file over to extract.exe . . .

As
Teancum said, you can also drag the *.LVL file you want over "
extract.exe" to get its content... But unfortunately, you might not be able to obtain all files packed inside it, or you might see those files extracted in the wrong place...

That's why I've posted a more difficult method, but which is working all the time...

Is it possible to replace BF1 textures with the improved BF2 ones? Just a theoretical question.

Just type "
cd [The folder where your *.LVL file is located]" after "
C:\My documents>". For sample, you should enter the following instructions to be able to get the content of *.LVL files located in "
C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront\GameData\Data\_LVL_PC\SIDE" :
Code: Select all
C:\My document>cd C:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront\GameData\Data\_LVL_PC\SIDE

It is compressed in a *.ZIP archive. You just have to extract it in the folder containing the *.LVL files, whose internal files are needed, to "
install" it...

Just too clear things up for those wondering, the current tools can only extract a few textures from the game. There's not much we can do with 2-5 textures.

It depends of the *.LVL files you tried LVL Extractor on...
