I guess he thinks that enhancing the number of characters of a Hero's name and reducing its weapons' would make the game working properly with an hex-edited "mission.lvl". In fact, he'd like to do that to keep the original size of the *.LUA files he wishes to modify...

I think you're talking of LVL Extractor... This command-line program can only extract compiled LUA scripts... (*.LUB files)
In fact, it just pulls out some "raw" parts from "mission.lvl", without adding additional bytes, etc... So, the best way to mod SWBF II scripts would be to get the original *.LUA files... (Which might be released in SWBF II Mod Tools...)
