Tips for new map makers?

Heyo! I have a question or so about map making that I'd like to have a few pointers on.

Tips for balancing out map size to make gameplay not feel like you're going on a 5 year trip across the U.S back and forth?

Making a map interesting?

I have a feeling these may be fairly vague, but I wanted to ask this here considering the mountain of great map makers.

http://www.gametoast.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=31078 maybe have a look here, other than that, check out the FAQs in general, you might stumble across interesting topics there and maybe see things that your map doesn't feature

If you want faster paced gameplay, make your map grid 128x128. This creates tighter battles. Most of the stock maps are 256x256, but only use about 1/4 as playable space, with the rest just as part of the background. If you keep your play area to maybe 64x64 or a little bigger regardless of the size of the terrain you'll find the game a lot more fast paced.
