Copyright question

Post by sampip »

(Not sure if this is in the right topic) Just a little question on something I may have a stab at doing. I was thinking of having a shot at doing some of the models shown in 'the old republic' (which is a game to be released this year)s ord mantell. I was just wondering, should I put these into a map and release it, would it be breaking copyright restrictions?

I'm not sure either, but since:
1. The trailer is officially made public.
2. You're not stealing any copyrighted names, nor you're making money from it.
3. There is no law against taking inspiration from copyrighted objects.

MY guess would be that you're fine, but it surely wouldn't hurt to get this ok'd by an admin.

Thanks for those points, just so you know, I'm not replicating the whole thing, there's just a few designs in the screens that I like. If a member of staff could confirm (or differ) what mswf said, I'd be grateful, just to be 100 percent sure.

As long as you don't rip the assets directly from the game (which would currently be virtually impossible, the game having not been released to the general public), you're pretty much okay.

Agreed, and plus, it would be your own reproduction. If you look in the Model Showcase Thread, most of the models in it are inspired work off an existing design. It shouldn't be any different in this scenario.
