Custom sides or stock sides?
Nowadays there are many big names in the Star Wars Battlefront II modding scene, we have Battlefront Extreme, the Conversion Pack, Dark Times... just to name a few; so I was wondering, did any of these modifications replace the original Battlefront for you? Do you still play the stock maps with the stock sides, or do you turn to a mod whenever you want to play?
I for one will always choose sides mods over the stock sides, I mean, there is nothing wrong with them, I like the original class set up, but I prefer custom sides, they often add something new to experience in the game, a re-imagination of the original sides, besides, having different classes to play keeps me interested in the game, in fact, I would have abandoned SWBFII a long time ago, if it wasn't for the great stuff created by the awesome modding community (thanks a lot guys!).

Re: Custom sides or stock sides?
For me it depends how the sides are made, I have specific tastes on how I like the sides to be. Also most sides/side mods are repeats of the many others, occasionally they are different but it's not often that I like them. So I guess I stick with the stock sides.

Re: Custom sides or stock sides?
Depends on my mood. Sometimes I like playing things closer to the way they were in the original game, other times I like somewhat substantial changes in the sides. The stock sides are fun because they're nicely divided by very distinct classes. What kills a lot of side mods is that there really isn't a lot of distinction between some of the classes. A lot the times the sides wind up being a list of progressively more powerful units, which just isn't fun in the long run. The side mods I keep installed are the ones that have the same feel as the stock sides, no matter how many visual changes they make.
I think a lot of modders these days feel as though everything they do has to completely re-imagine the game mechanics. While there's no doubt that innovation is good, I like leaving some things alone every now and then. The best example for me is my contest maps from SWBFFiles. I thought it would be weird to make a map without custom sides, but I actually came to really enjoy playing with the stock units and would never want to create new sides for either of the maps.

Re: Custom sides or stock sides?
I'm not really a fan of the stock sides, but I still enjoy them. I prefer modded ones as Nihillo said, as they always add something new to the game. When ever I make sides, I always make sure that none of the units a overly powerful, and I give units that have great abilities very weak weapons to compensate for that. That's why I really love BFX and DT. Each unit has their own disadvantages and advantages, and the more powerful classes have a very big drawback. I think the true victim of overly powerful sides are the reps, as nearly every one likes them, and plays them more often then other sides, so they try to make the experiences more easier to win. I admit, some of my sides are like that, but I'm starting to change that and I noticed that the sides are more fun to play with. In any case, my favorite sides are the made up ones. Ones that have nothing to do with StarWars or such, since the creator will have more freedom and can put in more creative things.

Re: Custom sides or stock sides?
I like the stock sides, but sometimes I think they need a little bit more. The Conversion Pack is the closest to how I wanted the real sides to be and Dark Times is my favorite setup so far.
However, custom sides that have one really good unit on one side and just the usual on the other are not very fun to play on.
I have my own ideas on how the sides should be, but that's a part of the mod I've been planning for upwards of three years now, and I don't think it will ever get made unless I do it myself. Which is unlikely.

Re: Custom sides or stock sides?
I, personally, feel the stock sides are fine. What I like to see are not mods that change the sides, but add to it, like the Conversion Pack. In my opinion, the base classes should be kept, well, basic. Let's just say Pandemic hit THAT nail right on the head . But after that, the sides are slightly lacking. The special classes should be where all the changes are at.

Re: Custom sides or stock sides?
I'm not much for the stock sides that Pandemic gave us but I do like the updated skins from RepSharpshooter but overall I prefer 9 classes instead of 5 so I guess that'll be custom sides. What I look forward to most in a map other than the map set up is the skin detail. Say if they use the stock sides, I might play it every now and then but I think adding custom skins adds to the overall creativity of the map and I'll likely play it more often.
I guess you can say I'm:
75% custom
25% stock

Re: Custom sides or stock sides?
Breaking online compatibility = No
convopack = epic win, i like playing some of the bf1 maps, and most of the extra units fit with Pandemic's units fairly well.
others, uh, can be interesting, but I don't really play them much, not that I don't like them, I just use most of my time ingame either testing my own mods or playing online
and for the record, I think Pandemic's sides are mostly good, with a logic flaw or two, and some "checks and balances" missing on a couple certain weapons (which can be added by FF, but then you get TK noobs), and also most force powers.

I don't need new units, but one thing I really dislike in the shipped game are the blasterbolts.
They are looking just...well, wrong.

Re: Custom sides or stock sides?
I still prefer stock sides. However many side modes I play, the stock sides just seem balanced right. One exception is the Conversion Pack sides that added more Legions, which should have been in the original game anyway.

Re: Custom sides or stock sides?
I have yet to find a modded side that made it harder for the human and easier for the AI, until i do i am sticking to the stock ones, its already too easy to kill AI. Also iv never seen any balanced modded sides.
