BF2 Playing Error

Post by Fiodis »

Recently, I tried downloading the Vista SP2 from Microsoft, and it put my computer into a vegetative state. I'm still not sure if I can recover all my modding stuff, but in the meantime I got a new one with Windows 7. However, when I try to install BF2, I have problems.

I see a lot of people who are having the error in Win7 where it loads and crashes. I don't even get that far. I put in the first installation CD, but after a while it says something along the lines of "Error copying file: Invalid Function" or something. I can get the exact message if you need it. Also, when I tried to install Xfire, it supposedly worked, but it refuses to launch even in compatability mode, so coudl it be there's some universal Win7 program-installing error?

If you need hardware/software specifics, please tell me where I can find them, as I'm not too computer-savy (I can only do the obvious stuff, and sort've understand how it works).

Re: BF2 Installation Error

Post by Fiodis »

Right, I've edited the title of this thread since I'm not quite sure Win7 is the issue anymore.

I had an idea to try and install the game on my Vista-using laptop, then cut and paste the folder into a USB drive and so manually install it into my Win7 computer. Oddly, I get the same error on the Vista, leading me to suspect either the disc or the drive. Now, this disc worked before on my old computer (the one that's broken now), so it ought to work here too.... Looking at it, I see some minor scratches, but those have been there forever and never impeded its performance. Also, the laptop I tried installing it on has a very iffy CD drive - sometimes it won't even recognize that a CD is in it at all. So I'm back to were I started: I'm not sure if it's an issue with Win7, the disc, the CD drive, or what.

As an aside, is it possible to mod BF2 without the game installed properly? It'd be hard, certaintly.

EDIT - Ok, yet another name change: I've got it installed. Whenever I try to run it, however, even in compatability mode, it crashes as soon as I attempt to load a map - any map. Occasionally it gives me a message about not having the latest DirectX, and tells me to install it from the disc. I do this, and the install goes right from the screen before the install bar to "Finish", almost as if it didn't install anything. I still get the running error. I downloaded DirectX 9.0c from Microsoft online, and I still get the error message saying that I need to install DirectX from the disc, which then doesn't work.

On a possibly related note, I see that my graphics chipset - Intel(R) G33/G31 Express Chipset Family - is not listed on the CD case as one that's supported by BF2. Could that be the issue?
