Race-themed map competition
This (staff-approved) map competition is, in essence, a contest to see who can create the best racing map.
Since Maveritchell has released his racemode source and I know of at least 2 people who are doing racing maps already, I thought of this.
In addition to that, we can use the winning map for the annual swoop/podracing competition!
The judges will be, of course, the public.
And now onto the technical stuff
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deadline
December 15 (It's the holidays, so why not?)
Requirements
1. A proper racemode (can be Mav's, or your own). Must have scoring system, start and end, and time tracking.
2. Custom racers/race vehicles: can be skins or new models
3. A racetrack (duh)
4. Make it creative and have fun!
Suggestions
- Maybe Boonta Eve, however remember the map should be creative
- Make it fun!
- Having a custom racemode will most likely up your score considerably
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\
Competition entrants must be announced no later than November 25.
Maps may be posted in the WIP thread, and can be WIP at this point.
Map links must be pm-ed to me by December 15, and I will post the links once I have all of them.
If this is too much like Ateas' Unorthodox map competition, I apologize.
Good luck!
Contest Entrants:
-Hak'orth: Magma Circuit, by Taivyx
-Rancor Galactic Park, by MetalcoreRancor
-Boras II: Stunt Course 3.0, by SBF_Dann_Boeing
-Coruscant: Speedway, by Darth_Maul/Xavious

Lol, kidding. I'd recommend standardizing the race mode coding, since there's not really any different way you're going to get the things you're looking for in a race mode.

Re: Race-themed map competition
I propose an idea: We take all the maps' that are made for the comp's .wld files and apply one per mode in one final map. That way there could be 6 racetracks in one map.

Re: Race-themed map competition
Awesome idea! That would be really cool, then it could be like a tournament. It would really increase the size, but it would be worth it I think.
Off-topic: But I like the new layout, it'll take some time getting used too, but it's really cool.

Re: Race-themed map competition
@Mav: Some could have much more creative things, such as awards (like, instead of endurance, war hero, etc.), such as "top-notch racer", when they complete a lap in under *blank* of time.
@Challenger: Nice idea, however, the public (modders or not) are our judges. We could however take the three best or so and release them in a map pack, not one map with the layers different from each other.
This is not final, however, I am working on a lava-world based racing map, and may submit it to the competition.

wow, for the first time a decision is up to me!Taivyx wrote:Yeah, I guess, if lieutenantcoda agrees to let the winning map be the race map.
well anyway, sure, i agree, the winning map shall be the race map. but like pods, there were many wacky circuits to race on. i say instead of just the winning map, how bout 2nd, 3rd, 4th best map also have vehicles! anyway, Taivyx, maybe you could set up a poll. the questions would be the pods will be in the 1st, 1st and 2nd, 1st-3rd, 1st-4th winning maps. one question could be that all maps will have the vehicles. well, if the poll does come out, it will be decided.

Re: Race-themed map competition
I think that Challenger's idea is pretty good. I think that he means we could do it like this:
the first map would be under conquest, and this is just an example
ReadDataFile("dc:RAC\\rac.lvl", "rac_race1")
the second would have this in the script:
ReadDataFile("dc:RAC\\rac.lvl", "rac_race2")
and the third would have:
ReadDataFile("dc:RAC\\rac.lvl", "rac_race3")
I think that would be a pretty good setup. If three maps would be included, then combine the odfs and msh, and all that stuff together for each map, and then have a world1, world2 and world3 in the main world folder, in this example RAC. That would free up addon space by two-three maps.

Re: Race-themed map competition
@Fionwe the Master ( ): Non-modders may find it weird, and bug us about it. The simplest (although larger) option would be a mappack.
I can't seem to find how to do a poll, can someone help me?
The place where the poll options were before has turned into a file attachment place.
EDIT: I just thought of something. Since racing works best in multiplayer, how bout for the testing, we set up a server running all of the comp maps? It could be at a certain time, so everyone who wants to can test it.

That would work, yeah. But then everyone who wants to test any map would need to have each one in their addon folder.

Re: Race-themed map competition
That is the point of testing........ to get and test all of them, then decide which one is the best out of all of them.

Yeah, that was my idea exactly! Thanks for the feedback on my idea (btw Fionwe, check your PM's in the JD Forums).Master Fionwë wrote:I think that Challenger's idea is pretty good. I think that he means we could do it like this:
