Need help in recreating an "effect"

Some of you may have seen "I Passed My Test", while some of you may not. The time has come to make another video that is another parody of The Lonely Island but I am not sure how to recreate an effect my brother wants me to.

The effect is this(no, it's not bad or anything). I somehow need to make an effect that looks close to the lighting in that one. I have a greenscreen, but that won't work. What I'm thinking is: Get a dark, open room. Get a bit of fog/smoke flying around. Get a disco ball/a powerful light with holes that can shine in all directions. Put the two people in front of it and done. The only downside to this is I have to get a disco ball(actually a color/light rotator thing) and the good ones are not in my budget. I have a bunch of lights to light my greenscreen but if I made coverings for those it'd probably look bad.

Any suggestions on what I should do?

I'd say as opposed to the disco ball (which would refract the light too much to get the lens flare effect imo), you should have someone hold something like a piece of paper and move it back and forth across the light (causes a significant, but not 100% darkening of the light). The fog will definitely be good to catch the rays. Its worth a shot if you ask me

Yeah. I got a plastic cone from a broken light and put tinfoil on the inside and I think it looks pretty good.

I tried waving a piece of paper in front of it but that didn't look too good. Tonight I'll try it outside and maybe get some fog or something flying around. I'll also get someone in front of the camera and try the paper again.

I'll also get some blue covering for the light so that it casts blue rays.

EDIT: Here's what I got from that picture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AY5Wz4yR1qk

Pretty cool! Put a person in front of it, and I think you'll get a good effect

A smoke machine is what will actually give you proper lines to then 'chop up'.

I used to be a DJ for several years.

Yeah, the only problem is I have to buy one for about a ten second use. :|

If you know where to look, I'm sure they're available for rental.

You can do lots of cool stuff with smoke machines, I assure you that you wouldn't only use it once.

Never thought about that...

Now that I think about it, yes, you're right. I'm still uneasy about buying one though. I can almost duplicate the fog with some random mixture in a fry pan. But the real question is: How good do I want it to look?

My advice would be to look for a rental option. There are tons of people like you, who need something like a smoke machine, turntable, projector, carpet cleaner, etc. for a one-time use. There is most likely a place that rents out smoke machines.

Any place that rents PA/DJ/lighting equipment will likely rent smoke machines. I never had trouble finding one back in the day.

Alright, here's what I think I am going to do: Have nice, even lighting on the characters, a black background, and a spotlight behind them. I'll then apply the blue rays effect and make a mask around the characters so it looks like it's not hitting them and they're not blue.
Or use a greenscreen to separate layers easier and make it look all the better. Here's another test: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCVyLrtg ... e=youtu.be

I must say, that looks pretty good for not using a smoke machine. Well done!

Thanks. I just made another test here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1W1dKtW ... e=youtu.be

It is in extremely slow motion because what you see there is basically all we got with the two of them.
