So apparently Google is making a new browser from scratch called Chrome. Anyone heard of it or know anything about it?

I like it, especially the user-friendlyness and the lack of clutter, but there's a lot of missing features that would be nice. For example, you can't click with middle mouse and race to the bottom of the page. I can't figure out how to open my favorites (only how to bookmark). The buttons are smaller and you can't customize it to the same extent as firefox. And it doesn't seem to be as 'intelligent'.

Hopefully they'll release the sourcecode so we can make little addons like they did for firefox.

One of the things I really like is if one of the tabs freezes up or gets messed up or something, the rest of the browser isn't affected. You can also end processes within the browser. Its also significantly faster than both firefox and IE. Also, when you close out of Chrome, and open it back up, for your home page, it shows you a list of all the sites you've been to recently and a picture with them, along with a google search bar on the right. Very convenient for managing your surfing.

I noticed when I opened Task managar that I had 4 chrome.exe's running. I'm wondering if that means that each tab is actually its own browser and uses its own process. That's a big no no. Each individual chrome exe uses a fair amount less CPU than a firefox exe, but you have to keep in mind that there's a bunch of chrome exes, so you're actually using more.

For now, I'm sticking with firefox.

A fresh take on the browser
At Google, we spend much of our time working inside a browser. We search, chat, email and collaborate in a browser. And like all of you, in our spare time, we shop, bank, read news and keep in touch with friends - all using a browser. People are spending an increasing amount of time online, and they're doing things never imagined when the web first appeared about 15 years ago.

Since we spend so much time online, we began seriously thinking about what kind of browser could exist if you started from scratch and built on the best elements out there. We realized that the web had evolved from mainly simple text pages to rich, interactive applications and that we needed to completely rethink the browser. What we really needed was not just a browser, but also a modern platform for web pages and applications, and that's what we set out to build.

So today we're releasing the beta version of a new open source browser: Google Chrome.

On the surface, we designed a browser window that is streamlined and simple. To most people, it isn't the browser that matters. It's only a tool to run the important stuff - the pages, sites and applications that make up the web. Like the classic Google homepage, Google Chrome is clean and fast. It gets out of your way and gets you where you want to go.

Under the hood, we were able to build the foundation of a browser that runs today's complex web applications much better . By keeping each tab in an isolated "sandbox", we were able to prevent one tab from crashing another and provide improved protection from rogue sites. We improved speed and responsiveness across the board. We also built V8, a more powerful JavaScript engine, to power the next generation of web applications that aren't even possible in today's browsers.

This is just the beginning - Google Chrome is far from done. We've released this beta for Windows to start the broader discussion and hear from you as quickly as possible. We're hard at work building versions for Mac and Linux too, and we'll continue to make it even faster and more robust.

We owe a great debt to many open source projects, and we're committed to continuing on their path. We've used components from Apple's WebKit and Mozilla's Firefox, among others - and in that spirit, we are making all of our code open source as well. We hope to collaborate with the entire community to help drive the web forward.

The web gets better with more options and innovation. Google Chrome is another option, and we hope it contributes to making the web even better.

But enough from us. The best test of Google Chrome is to try it yourself.

I may try it after beta form but im hoping as a coder it wont suck to have to test all websites and server now using , ff , ie and the new chrome, hehe. all of them seem to have their own "challenges" and Its annoying...simple may be nice and I like the 'each open browser is its own process" but well see.

I, personally, have yet to find anything that beats Firefox, but I'll give it a try. Looks cool.

I just tried that yesterday, and there is nothing there that's making me want to switch from Firefox.

IMHO, it's just another browser.

I'm posting using it, and all of GT works fine on it. It works fine, and it's very lightweight, opens in an instant, but lacks a lot of FF's functionality. Good for small things, not so much for extended use.

I'm posting using it, too. I really like it, but there are two problems to me:
1: Favorites- Where are they?
2: Flash Games- I recently found that there is an AQ MMO open only to members, and it doesn't work right on Chrome.

Other than that, it's great!

Definitely not good. It lacks many features that Firefox already has :-/, I think even for a beta it should have more features packed in to make a good first impression. I'll test it again when it gets more around the RC stages.

It may not have a lot of features yet but it is fast! The fastest web browser I've tried even faster than Firefox but that might just be because it doesn't have to load as much of stuff because its still in the beta stages. Less components = Faster.

I don't know why, but Chrome is actually unusually slow for me, almost as slow as IE

Videos also lag really bad.

And yeah, the only major innovation with Chrome is that they put all your options and favorites and history and search bar on your homepage, instead of on menu bars (you can hit the new tab button if you want to go to the homepage). Other than that, its just extremely simple. I can't decide yet if that's a good thing or a bad thing. But I hate the fact you can't customize it.

Yeah I installed it at school and use it there all the time now because of it's really fast startup time. I think I'm gonna download it here. It's really very good for a beta IMO.
