[Solved, sort of] Crash to desktop upon 'launch' button

Whenever I try to launch a game - be it stock map, custom map, stock eras or custom eras, as soon as I press launch, SWBF2 crashes straight to desktop. I have not got a clue as to why this is happening and it has only started happening recently. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall the game, but to no success. Even BF2_Modtools has this problem.
My version is updated to 1.1 and I have the DVD version. The Unofficial 1.3 patch is installed. I have tried both compatibility mode to XP SP2 and SP3, and the microphone enabling, and that just changes where upon load it crashes.

You've prob tried this already, but have you tried removing some stuff from your addon folder? Too many things in there can cause rampant crashes

This was post-fresh install as well, and there was only two things in addon before I did that.

I don't know if it would be helpful in this situation from the first load and all, but did you try getting an error log? Couldn't hurt to try. Something like this happened to my many years ago after I messed up the stock files playing around with side mods. I'm not quite sure, because it was a long time ago, but I think I ended up completely uninstalling every trace of steam and then reinstalling all of it, but i'm not sure that would be relevant for the dvd version...

No severity 3s via BF2_ModTools either. So I have absolutely no idea what's causing this.
I might just uninstall the DVD version and try the Steam version, maybe I'll have more luck.

Sounds like the recording mixer bug. Try disabling it in audio options. If that fixes it, re-enable it and then enable stereo mix in Windows audio settings or plug something into the 3.5mm mic jack.

That was one of solutions I tried before posting here.

I've "sort of" solved it.
I thought that perhaps something was going wrong on the install so I uninstalled the DVD version and installed the Steam version instead. That version is working as it's supposed to. I have no idea why the DVD-based version does not. But anyway, I think I'll consider this one solved.
